The Fords did actively canvas support from their faithful and guess
what the GTA was swept up by mostly Conservatives. Whether this
endorsement actually will result in a "net benefit" to Toronto is
still unclear. The oversight of foreign takeovers of Canadian
companies has been reduced (smaller companies and takeovers that
"used to be" reviewed are no longer a concern for Investment
Canada). Note also that the recent Potash decision to DISALLOW a
takeover was a rare one. The shareholders and management reject the
proposal and even still it took a long time for to come back with
an answer. WIll Ford be quick to support the erosion of Bay Street?
That would hardly be good for business, well maybe only for the
handful of insiders looking to pocket a commission on selling out
the financial sector.

Well, I cannot say I disagree. Especially ranked ballots would be great, elections could cost much less money if we had those. But yeah, we should not take public opinion polls too seriously. They might be somewhat right but not completely and I think many people simply don't vote because they think their candidate has no chance of winning. No matter what the results of any survey are, I think voting is very important, really. I just hate when people who do not vote simply criticize everything and sometimes they might be partly responsible for the current situation.

Judging by recent comments about giving the next mayor of Toronto a pay raise, I can now understand why John Tory did not want the mayor's job. He makes more money working for CFRB and doing other endeavors. He may not make the millions like a hockey player or movie star, but it is still more than any mayor in Canada.

Things were back to "normal" pretty quickly. I had parked my car near where the first of several police cars blew up less than a week later.

The questions still remain regarding both the police and vandals. Were there under cover instigators among those who caused much of the chaos?

One thing for sure, the amount of street surveillance was unprecedented. Face recognition software on steroids scanned and cleared 100's lawful protesters who were detained under brutal conditions and then released without charge. Four investigations/inquiries are on the go but somethings may never get answered and small businesses may never get compensated.

Thanks for your coverage, it's been interesting reading how Toronto differed from Pittsburgh. We had a lot of the same feelings and issues after our G20, but it feels like we returned to normalcy quicker.

I know for a while, it looked as if it was all for naught, but we did have a positive PR boost after our summit, so I hope Toronto's is just around the corner!

A few acquaintances were severely hurt during the entire ordeal. The city reeks of the summit's aftermath, at least the papers and the pictures. I really hope that peace can be restored soon.

[...] And again today: Don’t know why the Police have not defused this. This group sounds like they are way too close, a block away from the “cage” now. I can only guess that they are trying to get some damning evidence, clear the bystanders, and then mobilize the Police counter-attack. I’m not about to get anywhere near Union Station or the Royal York. [...]

I still feel that the 1 billion is overkill. Yes, it's a "message" and "some form of deterrent" BUT it is also wasteful. Hosting both a G8 and G20 insures that consultants can bid up the cost of their services. One reason for the cost overrun thus far. The other was the false hope that a small community could host both large profile events, Toronto became the last minute back up plan.

The security force is a hash of military, RCMP and Police from across the country. It would have to be, local Police would not want to create any gaps in their day-to-day Policing of Toronto.

As of this morning, the Toronto Star noted that 20 individuals have been charged. One of which is the deaf man detained from the College incident and a "mentally unstable" man picked up from King and Front. I have no sympathy for violent provocations but the numbers only reinforce the fact that thousands of people are voicing their views peacefully in the face of a surplus of force.
