0 for 2 in City Tax Cutting

I’m all politicked out from the Ontario election, and now the election drums are beating in Ottawa, and soon Toronto will be having a debate — more like a shouting match — over punitive tax hikes. Today, we learnt that closing the libraries was all for nought. They didn’t consult the unions — rather odd given the Mayor is apparently pro-union — and now the union has won in arbitration to get those lost wages back. In the end, the public suffered, while the workers got their pay anyway.

Karent Stintz, City Councillor said:

“There’s a level of ineptness and incompetence that doesn’t serve the city well when we’re trying to make a case that we’re a mature level of government.”

That’s a bit of an understatement. How can Mayor Miller call for new taxes with a straight face when he’s now lost two of his so-called cost-cutting measures, causing those who most need the public services to suffer while (most of) the workers still receive their pay and the city barely saves a cent.
