A Holiday and Ice Time
A good news day. First Dalton McGuinty has declared Family Day (what a dorky name, couldn’t he name it Flag Day?) on the third Monday of February. Yay!! Not like I’ll personally benefit from another stat holiday, but it’s a good day for productivity. The better rested a person is, the more productive. The more overworked, the less productive and more error-prone.
Second, Mastercard is giving the city $160,000 to open the ice rinks on their usual day, instead of a week later as City Council had decreed in order to save taxes. AND Mayor Miller accepted!!! Shocking!!
It’s too bad Mayor Miller and Council didn’t connect the dots for folks during the Ontario election.
A is vote Liberal, B is the city will raise taxes.
Why? Because the Liberals are the only party that refuses to help the city out of its financial crunch for several years to come even though the province (under the Mike Harris government) created this mess. It’s too bad that Torontonians didn’t understand that simple connection. Or maybe they did and you guys want to pay more taxes to duplicate what your income tax is going to? However, now Mastercard has shown another way. Get the private sector involved, and the city doesn’t have to raise taxes at all. Mastercard gave this money freely with no strings attached. The publicity alone is goodwill that they cannot buy through advertising and posters. If other companies follow suit, who knows maybe Torontonians would to start to dream big, dare to dream of things that they’ve been brainwashed into believing that they don’t deserve, like a Queen subway line (I’ve blogged on this before)!
Anyway, for now adults are going to get another day off, well, most adults will. And the kids are going to get their normal ice time. Of course, now all they need is winter’s co-operation. That might be a bit tough.

Isn’t Family Day is a stat holiday that those leftists in Alberta cooked up, something like the Stampede only more well family oriented. Alberta has had Family Day for awhile.
IMO - Another stat is a welcome thing. We only now have the same number as other Provinces. Nothing to sneeze at, a day off is a day off.
LOL!! Yup, those Alberta lefties are something!
I’m rather astonished at the dire predictions the business community is lobbing at this idea, this in the same breath that they say we need to improve our productivity to match the west.
