Just Another Day on the Better Way

Take the TTC, the Better Way, our politicians and the TTC urge us all. (Hmmm…when was the last time we heard that TTC slogan???) And now with the new fare hikes, service shall improve, promise, really. And if we all agree to the city tax hikes, then we can really get moving, no more days like this:

It’s hot. People surge onto the Bloor platform in waves as each east or west train arrives in Yonge station and people race up to the Yonge line. But there’s no train waiting for either northbounders or southbounders. All that racing is for nought. Crackle, crackle. The announcer, in a bored voice, tells us that there’s a failure at Queen station, but a train is crossing over to the North side at Bloor, promise. Five minutes later an empty train trundles into view — on the southbound side. Perhaps the TTC needs a lesson in compass points? The crowd pushes itself onto the train and waits.

The northbound platform is packed, really packed now. A minute later that promised train arrives, sits, keeps its doors closed, then leaves. Three minutes later a packed train shoots into the station and its doors open, finally; the crowd on the platform is anxious to get on, and the crowd inside the train are anxious to stand their ground. Their immovable wall keeps the centre and far ends of the train nice and clear, and they get huffy if one dares to try to make it to that clear centre. Too bad. Dark looks all around, and a couple of us squeeze into that clearing and breathe relief. Just another day on the Better Way.
