Wow, We Did It!
Well! Toronto City Council has voted to defer voting on new land transfer and vehicle registration taxes. They want to see what the new provincial government will do. Since we know a big part of Toronto’s fiscal woes stems from the province forcing the city to pay for social services — a provincial and federal responsibility, best covered by income taxes — we can make this an election issue. If we were French from France, we’d be rioting in the streets by now. I don’t advocate such a radical approach, but we need to continue this protest. Already we can see what petitions and flooding Councillors’ voice mail and e-mail boxes can do. Now we need to up the ante, get them to change their minds on the new garbage taxes, and pressure the provincial government to resume their fiscal responsibility, just like they did with the 905. If we don’t continue fighting, we will find it more and more expensive and more and more onerous to live here.
