As an alumnus from CW Jefferys I can’t say I have seen first hand this lawlessness amongst its student when I was there. Actually, I might have on occasion and I may have been also part of it but nevertheless its there and it has been getting worse and change is needed.

I think is about time that this issue is brought out into the open. An inquiry independent of the Toronto school board and fronted by prominent human rights lawyer Julian Falconer was armed yesterday with the task of examining Jefferys and telling the board how to fix unsafe schools across Toronto.

I am to tell the truth, no matter where that truth takes me,” said lawyer Julian Falconer, who heads the new three-member panel. “I have a reputation for being blunt.

Specifically, Falconer will review:

1. Procedures surrounding student discipline and supervision.
2. The actual Jefferys building, to see if it can be made safer.
3. What other factors interfered with the school’s or the board’s ability to maintain discipline.
4. How these separate entities can be tweaked to improve the safety of schools across the GTA.

When people say that our schools are lawless they are right. These days anything goes in our schools. The administrations of these schools have been doing a good job of sweeping the hard times under a rug and just making things look good from the outside. We could point the finger all over the place to so many people and levels of government but the bottom line is change is definitely needed in how these schools are run, especially in the relationships between administrators, teachers and students. There is a certain level of law that needs to be laid in our schools. I am with Jordan’s mother who is wishing something good can come out of this tragic incident.
