Toronto Star “Evolution”

The morning commute was different for a couple of reasons. The first was that I didn’t sleep on the subway. The second was I was reading the paper. Even though I had seen the new design before, I couldn’t help but be enamored with the paper that the elderly lady was holding in front of me.

The Toronto Star looks cleaner. There seems to be a bit more whitespace. The content doesn’t seem to have suffered, but I couldn’t find the Editorial cartoon, a daily ritual. It was hidden in the middle of the World & Comment section. The cartoons seem to have suffered too. They took out the Piranha club, which was waaaay funnier than Adam @ Home. I hate Adam @ Home. The funnies seem to be smaller though.

One huge gripe though: I can’t believe my co-worker said I looked like the picture of Arnold on page A1. I guess The Star can’t really be faulted for that one.

Now here’s my question: with the larger font size and less wider space, is the content going to suffer? Is there going to be less news? I wondered this aloud and my even-minded brother chimed in, “Are there fewer ads?”

I doubt it.
