The Streetcar Driver

TTC drivers are a well-paid bunch. Highly trained, they are responsible for hundreds of people per shift as they whisk them safely along their routes.

Today, I sat behind a streetcar as it approached a complicated intersection: Gerrard and Broadview. Gerrard curves, Broadview sort of curves, and streetcars can go straight or turn from one route to another. This is as challenging as streetcar driving gets.

The streetcar driver flicked on his right turn signal as we sat well back from the lights to give us all plenty of notice. At last the lights changed to green, and the red rocket moved forward. As usual, one SUV lunkhead ignored the streetcar’s signal and weaved round parked cars to roar up the right to beat it to the turn, not exactly staying in his lane very well. The streetcar driver, being a typical streetcar driver, drove his car forward hard with no let-up in speed. The two hit the intersection at the same time, the SUV taking a wide right turn, the streetcar zipping to the left. Yup, TTC drivers are well paid for what they do.
