Three Cheers for Toronto Sports Teams

Ok, so here we are at the beginning of another April and sports are definitely in the air here in Toronto. The Raptors, Blue Jays and Leafs all deserve hardy cheers for their efforts. As Torontonians, I think we should cheer for them because in most cases professional sport teams are great contributors to the overall standing a metropolitan city holds to the outside world. And we are all about making our city look good to the outside world right? Here in Toronto we are fortunate to have three major professional sport teams.
Our first cheer goes to the Toronto Raptors who are on the verge of winning their first division title. The 12 year old franchise has made it to the NBA playoffs before, with some guy Vince Carter, but has never finished the season on top. This team is looking good so look out for them to go deep into the playoffs.
Second cheer goes to the Toronto Blue Jays. This organization went out this past off season and spent millions bringing good players and beefing up an already high powered offensive club. There are high expectations for them this year so watch them as they battle the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox for the top of their division. The feeling was good 15 years ago when the Blue Jays won their first of two World Championships, hopefully this year they can make the playoffs.
Our third cheer goes out to the Toronto Maple Leafs. We all know there is a lot of history around the Leafs and is considered one of the richest sport franchises around. Although they seem to be in a rebuilding phase the pressure making the playoffs are high, especially with the fans. This is the last week of the regular season and they are one point out of the last playoff spot. Tell me this does not bring excitement to what is sometimes called “a Hockey City’? Watch the Leafs this week and cheer them on as they make a final push to reach for the post season.
So the next time you see a “Go Toronto Go” on a TTC Bus or car window flags with team logos flying through the wind remember, Toronto’s professional sports teams are very important to this city and without them we would have nothing to cheer for. So what do you think? Would Toronto be Toronto without its professional sports teams?

Good post! But I have to admit I long since lost my love affair with the Leafs. At least in the Ballard era, they were entertaining off the ice even though losing on it. I’ve never watched the Raptors, but loved going to Blue Jays games!
Nice post but…
The Toronto Argonauts are also a Toronto Sport Team so the heading should say “Four Cheers for Toronto Sports Teams”.
I’m getting a little tired of people leaving out the Toronto Argonauts. They are pulling in on average 30,000 plus fans a game and are hosting the #1 rated show in November The Grey Cup.
The Toronto Argonauts are notable for being the oldest pro football team in Canada and the United States, and they are also the oldest pro sports team in North America to still retain its original name; for having the most Grey Cup wins with 15
Just my 2 cents
Yes, I aqgree. I should have included the Argos. I too am an Argos fan, somewhat. It is so easy to over look them when we have other teams playing in an US Market and I beleive thats what happens with the Argos. So with that in mind, my bad, When the upcoming CFL season starts we need to cheer for the Argo too!
whelp! there go the leafs. heh.
