Accessability is a Start

The Spacing Wire had a great post regarding “TTC makeover ideas”. Aesthetics, Service and Function. All very important in keeping the TTC more enjoyable and attractive.

The TTC can better address our aging demographics and make their coverage more inclusive by adding more subway station escalators and elevators. Making the current system more accessible makes it easier to use FOR EVERYONE. While many have blasted the GO lately, they have started the long hard path of rethinking their infrastructure by adding exits, stairwells, and extending their platorms. Very commendable. This was part off the “bottleneck” at Union. Jumping into the herd is still daunting for some but a far better exercise now with more escape routes! More routes mean shoter wait times to get on or off and down the line, better door to door service. The TTC could learn something here.

It’s a small price to pay really. Today’s odd delay or transit construction has not been as annoying as any given summer’s Gardener reconstruction or road repair. Short term pain, long term gain! Another step to making the GO and the better way even better.

That’s why TTC’s decision to request new streetcars rather than fully refitting the existing fleet and soldiering on for 20 more years is important - the new cars will be limited mobility-accessible in a similar way to the new low floor buses.
