Jumping on the Island Airport Bandwagon???
It’s official. There are 10 daily flights to Ottawa on Bombardier turboprop planes from Toronto Island Airport. Porter Air is charging from $120 to $319 for the trip (the cheap tickets have a $100 cancellation fee while higher fee tickets allow for more refundable travel). Heard that Porter even provides a shuttle from Union to the Ferry.
So you can take a 1 hour Porter Prop-Plane flight versus other options…
Greyhound Bus - 5 to 6 hours trip
Bus (advance tickets as low as $39 - Regular $75)
Via Train - 4.5 hours trip
Regular Fare for Coach to VIA1 first class ($109 - $173 before Tax)
Discount Fare for Coach to VIA1 first class ($80 - $149 before Tax)
Air Canada Flight or Tango - 1 hour
Discount Fare for first class ($111 - $456 before Tax and Fees)
Personally I’m a fan of the train. Truly a City Centre to City Centre experience. The bus was always my student favourite, you could catch any bus in/out as long as you had a ticket. SWEET. It will be interesting to see what becomes of the Porter service though.
How many people are itching for hourly flights to Ottawa from the core of the city??? The service is geared toward executive travel, I suppose Porter would have done their homework as far as demand but ??? Will the new service at the airport have even more air traffic flowing through? Will Air Canada regain access to the Monopoly that Porter now enjoys on the island?
What will be the future of Toronto THIS airport? Many questions still unanswered but I’m sure they will be in the 40 days or so run till we elect the next mayor…

I doubt I would use it for now.. but sidestepping the question of noise, location etc for the new airport.. I would like to see more competition and some lower domestic prices. It’s insane to pay more money to go to Winnepeg than London, UK.
