New Bylaw in Effect
A new bylaw was passed in the City of Mississauga called the “Pedestrian Regulations Act“. This bylaw restricts all sports or activities from city streets. The following is a quote from the text:
Organized sports including soccer, basketball and baseball etc. are to be exercised at public parks, schools, recreational facilities provided by the City of Mississauga
This new bylaw was passed due to complaints which include “several youths trespassing on lawns and driveways, striking vehicles with soccer balls, bicycle racing, youths loitering and general noise disturbances”.
Of course this new bylaw only affected the residents of Pilcom Court in Mississauga. It seems one angry resident took a lot of time to forge a very detailed, official looking document to deal with his or her annoyances with these issues.
Residents on the street said it wasn’t the first time they had received fake letters of this sort.
Oh the power we might wield. Could you imagine your indignation upon receiving this letter? I just can’t believe the person thought they would get away with this.
Annoying to deal with but so easy to commit such an act… I’d be surprised if it hasn’t been done before elsewhere!
It reminded me of a book I once read. While reading Robert Anton Wilson’s book “The Illuminatus! Trilogy” there was a section that discussed how easy it is to confuse people by placing signs in stores that read at the end “Thank You. Management.” That people will more easily obey such signs regardless of how odd the message is…

personally, i for one am glad for this. too many condo buildings have parking lots with kids playing soccer and bicycling without helmets and cricket and frisbee and other various sports in my neighborhood. this is a hazard for both, the kids and drivers in the area. but again, this law should be taken with a pinch of salt. on weekends for example, i enjoy playing some cricket in a school’s parking lot nearby. during these hours school is out, no cars are driving in and out of this area, and there are no pedestrians as such nearby and it’s on a minor side street and not a major road. we really can’t play in a park, since a tennis ball needs to bounce and players need enough space on the ground. making sure the environment you’re playing recreationally in is just as important is what i’m trying to get at.
The City of Mississauga sprawl has grown at a tremendous rate. It’s been great for industry, shopping, housing…
Unfortunately much of this comes without PLANNING! Youth and others have too few public spaces to use hence “sports or activities” in the streets around their neighbourhoods. How many parks are built these days?
The ByLaw seems like adding to the problem not solving it…
There should be rules based on “Own Risk Use” sheilding the owner from Liability during OFF HOURS. Schools should be able to “police” their property around school hours. That would make more sense.
Just to make sure, ensure you visit the link that says: “Continue reading…”
