The Search for Special Gifts

I’m not really a fan of the MEGAstore. Not that I don’t shop at one or two or go to the mall but it’s always nice to find a cool small shop where the staff/owner is genuinely interested in the products they sell. You know just as interested in the product you are holding in your hand and not (ONLY) trying to sell it to you. I guess I’m a sucker for stores that have a personal touch. Gift shopping can be a difficult chore and the coming weeks will definitely be taxing. There are some interesting options out there though…

I’ve always liked Magic Pony. Their new location on Queen Street West is great. They have always been my choice for odd unique toys and ecclectic artist books (Andrew Pommier comes to mind - his book launch party at the old store was amazing).

Another place to check out is the One Of a Kind Show. This year looks one of the biggest ever. There’s never a shortage of “gifts” there especially handmade goodies that are well “ONE OF A KIND”.

A gift membership at the ROM or the AGO might be an option too. Something that will keep giving back through 2006.

Good luck out there. It can be harsh harsh world out there…

Any other suggestions out there… Where in Toronto is your place to find the perfect gift?

one of my favourite gift idea’s that i’ve found is custom made knives at affordable prices. we have one of the best custom knife makers right here in toronto. look up george of george tichbourne knives at his workshop near the airport. and he’ll give you a super guide through his workshop and explain the intricate art of knife making. a perfect gift for the cook/fisherman/hunter/camper/and anything else outdoor related. by the way, i don’t work for him nor know him. just happened by his workshop one day and found his service and mannerism superb. his lovely wife and dog greet you at the door and you will love going through his collection of knives.

for those with kids in the family, you can also add on memberships to the zoo (http://www.toronto.zoo).

or for wine enthuisiasts, there are numous places for those who love to make their own wine. usually they do 30 bottles a batch. a gift receipt for such a place might be a fun idea.
