school harassment

I am very shocked by the story of the grade 11 student who was harassed by her fellow students, some of whom have been charged by the police for the problems they caused her.

I was harassed at school when I was a kid, from the time when I was in kindergarten to when I was in grade 7. I remember being in grade 1 or 2, getting slapped in the face by a grade 8 student, and one time in maybe grade 6 or 7 a guy told me he was going to bring in a gun and shoot me. Now we lived in a rural area, north of Guelph, and I did believe this guy, that he had access to a gun; kids were operating farm equipment, why not guns too? I thought he might actually do it. I wish I had known I could have gone to the police about it. The teachers noticed some of what was going on, but they didn’t know the extent of it and didn’t do anything. One time I looked really angry, retorting to something someone had said, and a teacher laughed in spite of herself, but didn’t ask any questions. My parents told me to “just ignore them”.

So I am very impressed that charges were brought against this girl’s harassers. It is possible for a lot of abuse to go under the radar of parents and teachers.

it’s different these days. if the same accusations were brought up ten or twenty years ago at the same school, they wouldn’t be taken so seriously and they’d try to solve it in-house, and possibly not be “successful” as bringing it to the police and so much media attention.
