Petro-Currency?

It’s in the news nearly everyday the price of gas, a barrel of crude and the strong Canadian Dollar. I guess the fat cats in Alberta are giving those here on Bay Street a run for their money. If crude goes down so does the dollar and vice versa… It used to be other commodities ruled the day for our dollar. Oil is so scarce that the Alberta tar sands are now cheap enough to drill. Oil prices are not going to drop too too soon with Katrina’s/Rita’s lasting overtones (76% of the Gulf’s gas production is still out!).

A higher Canadian Dollar… Ouch, our exports are going to hurt. Maybe that’s why Ford put their truck/van factories here in the GTA (they will be the first to go!!!). The latest Ontario Auto Labour battle rages on too. Hang on tight the R word (recession) has been making the rounds but it’s hard to say whether Oil will take the gas out of Ontario… The economy is strong for now though. I’m glad that GO fares are stable and the TTC is finally getting some cash. At least the “Gas Tax” is going back in our pockets… Well so long as we “invest” it in ourselves we’ll go a long way. The other “upside” to the strong dollar is that that a Euro or UK vacation gets cheaper by the minute that is if the airlines can still afford the fuel… The downside is few tourists to share our great city with though…

I just came back from a trip to the States and gas at the border crossing (Detroit) was at about 88.5. Man I wish I just lived THERE.
