Speaker’s Corner
I was never against having City TV’s Speaker’s Corner*. It gave Torontorians a chance to speak their mind. I never even minded the silly and fun things that came about.
I remember one time, while the British band, James, came to Toronto as part of their tour, they stopped in and sang one of their hits “Sit Down in Speaker’s Corner. Classic.
Last night, I flipped through channels inbetween commercials and stopped to see what was on Speaker’s Corner. Unfortunately, I stopped at the wrong time. For there before me was Speaker’s Corner’s version of a top ten booty-shake… apparently some unofficial top ten of Torontorians showing how they can shake their ass infront of the camera. Literally… I mean, it was just one close up shot of one bum jiggling after another.
I hung my head low at that point…
What a sad day for Toronto.
Having said that, you can now post your thoughts on thier online version of Speaker’s Corner right here. It’s not as effective as it’s bascially like a massive comment section. I think it would be better if they would accept video streams or audio-type messages.
* For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of Speaker’s Corner, it’s located outside of Toronto’s TV station, City TV and Muchmusic. It’s a little corner booth where people can drop in, pay something like a dollar (unless the price has rised) and have something like 30 seconds to say their piece of mind. The clips get weeded through and played ona half an hour show.

I never liked Speaker’s Corner. Any time I ever saw it, or saw it for a bit and then turned it off, I always thought that the people on there were idiots. Not that I’m such a fricking genius or anything, but I always thought it was an embarrassment to the city. But I guess that’s why “average intelligence” is called average… because it’s the norm.
I love Speaker’s Corner. It’s hilarious, really. Especially because some people on it are so pathetic that they’re amusing. I went down there today, actually. It’s a loonie for 2 minutes.
holly,
two minutes? didn’t realize it was that long. i suppose that gives them enough material to edit from.
I spent some time living in London, UK. I absolutely loved going to Hyde Park on Sundays for a “REAL” Speaker’s Corner. http://www.speakerscorner.net/
I had never realized how sad we are, that we must resort to a box and camera to speak our minds.
There’s something to be said about this.
Did you know there’s a “real” Speaker’s Corner at Nathan Philips Square? The only people who speak there are the Fulan Dong folks, but of course, they don’t actually speak.
Hmmm…
