T&T Superstore

They are popping up everywhere in Scarborough and Markham.

And I’m happy.

We’re talking about a franchised chinese supermarket where it’s huge, clean, organized and even gives english signs for each aisle. Plus, just inside the entrance of the store is a little food market. I’ve seen many people there at lunch (from all different cultures) lining up for some take-out dim sum.

And might I just add…

$2.99 for a BASKET of portebello mushrooms! I was estatic! Do you know how much it cost for just four of said mushrooms at places like A&P or Dominions? $3.99 if my memory is correct!

I was so excited I could have pee-ed my pants.

(How said is it that portebello mushrooms excite me THAT much?)

Duck, Duck… GOOSE!

Everyday while driving to work, I’ll pass a field of Canadian geese. And while they are lovely and a true Canadian symbol, they’re also damn dangerous when it comes to stopping traffic. More then once, drivers have had to stop due to geese crossing.

I know, I know… they say not to stop for any animals especially if it can put a risk to other drivers. But I’m not one to ever want to know what it would be like to hit one of those poor things.

While driving along on one particular morning, I remember seeing a goose step onto the road infront of my path. It then looked at me (or more to the point, my approaching car) and hesitated. He stepped back… and then forward… then back again.

Much like most stupid jay-walking Torontorians (well, I’m sorry - but you know who you are and what you do IS stupid… dangerously stupid!)

I kept on thinking to myself, Don’t! Don’t do it!

But damnit I had to slow down.

To add insult to injury, the bird honked at me as I drove passed it. Geez… totally unthankful that I tried to save its life.

Best Radio Station

Undoubtedly 99.1 CBC Radio. Everything else is painful.

The only music channel I can bear to deal with (even though I’m still in my 20’s) is 1050 AM. Everything else is garbage and and besides, anywhere else, for every one song played, you have to listen to ten commercials. Not worth my time.

Their show, “The Current” stands as a beacon. In the clutter of news, this crisp, probing show reveals on a daily basis what you didn’t know you needed to know.

If anyone mentions 680 news or Q107, I’ll vomit.

Best View of Town

This has to be a tossup between Canoe on top of the TD Centre at the 54th floow and Panorama on top of the Manulife Centre on the 51st floor. Both of them are pleasant evening lounges, Canoe caters more to the corporate clientele whereas Panorama caters more to the young yuppies looking to take their dates out for a fine experience. I personally liked hanging out at Canoe more than Panorama though, but the view is just breathtaking from both ends.

And whoever thinks that the view from the CN tower is better, give these two places a try first and you’ll regret the $20+ you paid to go up an elevator on an antenna.

Best After Hours Hangout - 7West

7 West is located just off Yonge St., one block south of Bloor in a narrow converted house. It might be a bit easy to miss, so look for the big “7 West” banner hanging from the 2nd floor.

The crowd is a mix of locals, clubbers or university students depending on the time of day (or night) you visit. The place still has a dark, cozy feeling to it where you can linger over a bottle of wine, or cappuccino, or pick something from their affordable menu.

Best Dessert - Future Bakery

Future Bakery - the noisy atmosphere, the superb selection of desserts and cakes, the mull of students and chic hipsters and metrosexuals abound make this place one of the best sugar eateries in town. Open and accessible at nearly all hours of the day.

483 Bloor St. W., just west of Spadina.

Best Car Wash - Denny’s

Denny’s Touch Free car wash in Mississauga advertised as the “Best Car Wash in town!” (it really is!), on Mavis Rd. just north of Dundas. Superb Service. In & out in less than fifteen minutes. Avoid weekends, they’re packed. They do itneriors and exteriors down to the last wipe down with wax cloths and cleaning tire rims by hand. Just the place you want to go if you want to recover all the lost loose change that disappeared between the seats.

Stories in our Papers

GlobeandMailhomelessarticle.jpgI was a little mad on the weekend when I read this article in the Globe & Mail.

I wasn’t mad because they talked about the initiatives put forth to look after the homeless in Toronto, because as far as I’m concerned, what they’re trying to do is a good thing… stopping the homelessness, rather than what they’ve done in recent years - offer the homeless blankets, and food, and sleeping bags to help them live their lives on the street.

The new initiative is a step forward from what they were doing.

However, the reason I was mad was that I know the guy in this picture. He’s talked about later in the article - referred to as Dave.
