TTC impending strike

Soo…. the TTC will be in a strike position as of April 1st… I drive in from Mississauga so that won’t be an issue for me. My friend at work thinks they won’t strike for too long if they do. I think… they don’t have enough money, asking for more money, raising fares… where is the TTC going? I read on cbc.ca that they are going to think about having bike racks on the front of buses, they have them in Vancouver. *ahemzonefareshemhem*

Ish! Ish!

Ish… that’s how my daughter says ‘Fish!’

We’re all very proud of her.

In light of this new development in our household, I’ve been thinking of that Toronto Aquarium plan they’ve tried to implement for the past ten or so years.

I’m almost on the verge of giving up. Yet there is a tiny part of me that is still desparately clinging on to hope that one day, in the near future, we will see an aquarium in Toronto.

Yes, I admit it. You’re looking at a huge marine life geek. My father raised me to look forward to weekly episodes of ‘Ocean’s Alive’ and ‘Beneath the Sea’.

With my daughter’s latest interest in ‘ish’ it would be perfect to have an aquarium to take her to.

This is an older article but still current enough to link:

Lonely No More.

One thing that’s great about living in downtown Toronto is that you never really feel lonely.. even when you ARE alone.

Every Saturday morning, I visit Kensington Market and the number of conversations I have with the various shopkeepers are endless. From the butcher, to the baker and even the man who sells African Jewellery at the side of the street! Occasionally, I stop by Moonbean to have a cup of coffee, and I usually find myself engaging in conversations with other customers about all sorts of things that we would have in common.

Nearby Kensington Market, is Chinatown. By lunchtime, I am often CRAVING for a plate of Roast Duck with Won Tons and Noodles. Kings Noodle is a great place to visit. It’s clean and the food is very well prepared. If I am alone, I’ll usually share a table with someone and the past few times that I’ve been there, I’ve shared tables with people who were really talkative! After lunch, I’ll go to my favourite Chinese grocery shop to buy some cheap and well-priced fruits. Funny enough, most of the workers in this shop are from Malaysia and we have a great time talking about home.

Although it’s great to go to Kensington and Chinatown with a partner, sometimes.. it’s not that bad to go alone either!

50 tracks

Who else is following this? Jian Ghomeshi’s 50 Tracks airs every day on CBC Radio One; I am not catching every one, but I listen when I can. It was good to hear Echo Beach again, I didn’t know Heart of Gold was released in the early 70s, and somehow Leonard Cohen had one of his songs suggested for each decade. Well maybe not every decade but it felt like it.

Here are a couple images from the St. Patrick’s Day parade this past Sunday.

Martini Anyone?

How’s that for an exotic floral arrangement! Canada Blooms showcased a wide variety of beautiful floral arrangements, delicate bouquets, dream gardens, creative landscaping ideas and the Barbie Fairytopia garden and cottage. That was all I needed to remind me that spring is just around the corner. Er, I hope!

Flight Cancelled

So another Canadian airline has bit the dust! I feel bad for the thousands of travellers who were counting on Jetsgo to get them somewhere important today. But I feel worse for the employees who woke up today to suddenly learn that they had no jobs to go to.

When is Corporate Canada going to be held accountable for their business practices? The press release on the company’s former website adds insult to injury by telling some rather pissed-off passengers that they’ll need to make alternative travel arrangements. Um yeah, thanks a lot! Try telling that to the parents who are now going to miss their daughter’s wedding in Vegas and can’t afford to book a last minute ticket priced at $2000 CDN with an alternate airline. Or try explaining that to the 6-year old who had his heart set on being at Disneyworld next week! Good friggin’ luck is all I have to say!

A violent week

I’m sure all eyes and ears of my fellow Torontorians have been following some of the tragic and graphic news of this week. Seems like one bad news right after another.

A poor child clinging onto life… The graphic scene of a police car, pinning a man armed with two knives to a bike rack… And the horrific scene of a man lighting himself on fire.

My husband and I watched the news today as the EMS and firefighters were in the spotlight for their quick and brave responses.

Thank god for that. I know that the media’s purpose was to put a positive spin of such events by showing the selflessness and heroic acts of these people as a way of lifting some of the gloom on our city this week… a way of pumping moral.

I do appreciate the effort but I am still somewhat saddened to hear such events take place this week.

And that little girl in the hospital… *sigh*

A Challenge Never Hurts

“better to have tried and failed and had a great time along the way then doing well not much of anything…”

- a barfly’s wisdom has never been so true…

(challenge yourself to be better than you were yesterday - you’ll get to smile at yourself tomorrow)

Random challenge of the moment: share three smiles today…

1. with a close friend
2. with a distant relative
3. with a total stranger
