TTC impending strike

Soo…. the TTC will be in a strike position as of April 1st… I drive in from Mississauga so that won’t be an issue for me. My friend at work thinks they won’t strike for too long if they do. I think… they don’t have enough money, asking for more money, raising fares… where is the TTC going? I read on cbc.ca that they are going to think about having bike racks on the front of buses, they have them in Vancouver. *ahemzonefareshemhem*

If you drive in from Mississauga, you’ll be affected by the strike because there will be so many more people on the road. I remember a strike from the early 90s and it was terrible. A drive that normally took 40 minutes took 3 hours!

I think it’s not terribly reasonable to have fare zones in Toronto… cities much larger than Toronto have only one “fare zone” like New York City…

I made the comment about zone fares because the TTC is always asking for more money; perhaps it should ask its riders, who can ride for 2 hours for their $2.50.

I don’t work 9 to 5, so I seldom drive during rush hour. I don’t expect to be held up for hours on the road if there’s a TTC strike. However, I took the GO train during World Youth Day, and those trains were PACKED with pilgrims, so hey, what do I know.

I hope there isn’t a strike. Not just because of the inconveniences a TTC strike will result in, but the TTC has been fighting really hard to get riders back. It would be a shame that those millions of dollars spent trying to convince us to use “The Better Way” will be wasted. The system will lose more riders who will simply use their cars. I also think that the public will lose faith in the TTC in the long run. Why take two giant steps back when the TTC’s employees should take a few small steps forward and urge their unions to avoid strike action. I understand the employees need increases, but don’t tick off the people, the millions who use transit, who pay their $18-$30 hourly wages.

If there is a strike, it will be difficult to trust the TTC again.

I hope the ttc doenst go on strike because that would mean people would have to take the taxi which will make us pay more money then we do with buses. I mean I don’t know why the ttc arent thinking about people who use the ttc to get around the city……….All I can say is that the TTC TRANSIT COMMITEE ARE SELFISHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the union is just being ridiculous. They can’t keep on fighting for raises forever, a bus driver should not make more than a programmer yet they are. The gov’t should put a cap on them because it’s just not making sense anymore. I understand the need of a union to protect employees, but not to abuse the company when it’s hardly surviving.

The recent change of tix also pissed me off cuz when I used an old tix with 10cents on top, this driver said to me “they’re worthless to us after 3/31, you have to pay again”. They really should watch what they say. I used my hard earned money to buy the tix, and the total I paid equals to current fare. Just because TTC put a short notice to revoke the old tix, doesn’t mean it’s “worthless”. I had to waste 1+hr to travel to yonge/bloor and line up for refund, watching 3 employees: 1 doing actual refund, 2 doing nothing but signally next person up and walk around telling ppl booth closes @ 7 n ppl at the back might not make it. A real service industry would cut the line at 7 and service all those that made it in the line by 7. These ppl are just trying to get their money back.

Maybe what the TTC needs is better resource mgmt analysis to look at how their processes are inefficient and the employees’ so called work are unnecessary (like the 2 mentioned) so that more $$ is saved to accommodate real issues like high oil price and not a $50K driver asking for a raise. But what the heck, no matter how useless those workers are, the union won’t let them fire them anyway…let’s hope an alternative comes to bring on some competition…

Yet another TTC strike and it seems the union is operating under illusional issues to justify the strike. They claim not only money issues but pensions and outsourcing of maintenance workers are the deal breakers. According to the city these last two issues as well as others regarding working conditions were no longer an issue and had been addressed. Why the TTC union is deciding to strike and refuses to continue talks over the weekend is a complete mystery and shows the union and its President have NO regard for the people of Toronto who depend on the services of the TTC.

I think my bike is “Better than the better way”.
I can make by 18km bike ride faster than taking the bus.
    Personal record 38 minutes.
TTC record 1 hr 15 minutes.

If the TTC keeps striking and raising their fares people will have to choose other alternatives. Companies that can provide alternatives for working will do so. If everyone in my family had monthly TTC fares it costs about the same as having a car. So why bother with the TTC. Oh well who I’m moving out of Toronto anyway.
