Gym rats
Day after day, I witness the same scenerio… Sweaty men sucking in their gut, trying to impress some limber, aerobic queen. Women in the locker room talking about the same thing (i.e. relationship problem) with their workout buddy every day, during the same time, for a whole year. AT THE LEAST. People getting on a weight machine and totally abusing it… not just the machine itself but probably their bodies due to ill-form and improper use.
Gym rats. Of the worst kind.
The kind that comes to the gym for social interactions… putting their horny-dating needs first and working out third, next to the second place priority of ‘lets muck up this machine so it needs maintenance for another week or two… AT THE LEAST!’
So while I was on my cardio machines, working up a sweat while trying to breath out of my mouth in fear of inhaling anymore of the questionable odour coming from the man two machines down from where I was (I’m guessing he decided that working out without socks was the way to go), I was swept over with a very sad nostalgia…
My entire gym, and that of any other gym I have joined after the life as a student era ended for me, has heavily reminded me the sad reality that I will never again experience the joys of my very first gym experience…
The Athletic Centre at U of T.
A large complex with two pools (one olympic size), an indoor track, cardio machines, tennis courts, basket ball courts, three different studios for aerobics, weight machines and a free-weight room… not to mention the largest locker room I have ever seen, where I had the pleasure of purchasing a full locker for the entire year!
More to the point… an environment where I was surrounded by people who were actually training with the purpose of improving their physical strength and endurance.
*Sigh* Those were the days.
