Captive audience

I saw The Prince And Me while I was on an airplane, and I thought that the bar kind of looked like the Underground at York U. I thought there must be more than one building constructed in that style somewhere else in North America. Turns out it actually was shot at York U, as well as at U of T. I like some of York’s architecture, in particular Vari Hall and the Fine Arts Building, Phase II. (is it still called that??)

I believe the Fine Arts building phase 2 is now known as the CFA (Centre for Fine Arts). With that huge window looking into all of the studios, it is quite a nice space, at least it used to be. They are very foolishly building something on that lawn between the CFA and Burton Auditorium, which will block sunlight into the studios, thereby rendering the original design moot.

    Stupid York.

Next time you’re in Vari Hall, you should go to the centre of it and jump. The echo sounds like the walls are flapping.

Oh, I love Vari Hall’s rotunda!!!! I once heard some musicians drumming on various levels of the balconies too, on either side. I loved stamping my feet while walking through it.
I spent 4 years in and around the Centre for Fine Arts, and I loved its wacky interior with the exposed heating pipes, and its cool exterior with the slanted windows.
One thing that misted me up however, last time I visited, is that they have converted the Founders College dining hall into office space. :( All those memories of dances & dinners with my res buddies… gone. But CHRY’s offices are as grubby as ever I’m sure.

I could definitely spot a few of the outside campus locations from the U of T St. George campus. One scene was right in front of Sidney Smith Building on St. George Street and it totally took me out of the movie (Mind you, I’m not saying that it was a masterpiece so it’s not the end of the world but I hope when I start focusing on location, and other stupid details.). It was interesting how they modified the U of T signs though.
